Car Rental in Iceland > Akureyri
Akureyri is the largest town outside the Greater Reykjavík area. Often called the Capital of the North it is the center for trade and services in north Iceland and often referred to as the most beautiful town in the country. Akureyri is only 100 km south of the Arctic Circle situated in Eyjafjörður fjord which is the longest fjord in the country. The long fjord and the tall mountains that tower over the area make it one of the more scenic towns you will find on the island.
The town is conveniently located close to many popular attractions. Mývatn, Goðafoss, Dettifoss and Ásbyrgi are all relatively close by (60-90 min drive)
Akureyri is Icelands winter sport center and Mt. Hlíðarfjall the most popular ski resort in the country is only a 10 minute drive from the city center.
There are many museums that deserve attention. To name a few, the Folk Museum illustrates the cultural history of the area and gives insight to the settlement of the region while Nonnahús and Davíðshús offer insight into the life and work of two of Iceland’s most famous writers.
